The inauguration of the 8th edition of the festival will be loaded with nostalgia for all cinephiles and lovers of old movie theaters. For this, we will carry out a double feature of 80s cinema.

The double feature, or double bill, was a common phenomenon in movie theaters a few decades ago, where two films were shown for the price of one. This form of exhibition, practically obsolete today, once filled the programming of theaters in the city of Vigo. We’re talking about now-defunct theaters like the Avenida Cinema, the Palermo Cinema, the Niza, or the Minicine.

In this inaugural session, we will screen two landmarks of 1980s cinema, both of which will celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2024.

On one hand, we’ll start the screening with “The Terminator” (1984). Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, this science fiction and action film is one of the most remembered and celebrated time travel and post-apocalyptic future movies by genre cinema lovers.

James Cameron’s film was revolutionary for its special effects, which were very innovative for the time, as well as for the iconic design of the cyborg. The movie was a commercial and critical success and helped launch James Cameron’s film career and consolidate Arnold Schwarzenegger’s. Its impact on popular culture is, to this day, unquestionable, with “The Terminator” being totally recognizable by most people, whether or not they’ve seen any of the six movies, series, or comics that make up this franchise that began in 1984.

The double feature will continue with another milestone of popular culture and, more specifically, of horror: “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984), a film directed by one of the fathers of modern horror cinema, Wes Craven.

This movie, considered one of the best slashers in cinema history, was a huge success that led to an extensive franchise with six sequels, a remake, and even a crossover with the killer from “Friday the 13th”, Jason Voorhees.

The iconic antagonist of the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise, Freddy Krueger, portrayed by actor Robert Englund throughout the saga (except in the remake), is part of popular culture and has invaded the nightmares of hundreds of teenagers for decades.

As we mentioned, the demonic Freddy Krueger has already experienced a crossover. On this occasion, during the celebration of this session, he will experience a very different crossover facing off against the feared T-800. Whoever triumphs in this double feature, both will be a draw for the festival’s freakiest audience, who will be able to enjoy these two gems of 80s cinema as they were experienced 40 years ago: in the darkness of a large movie theater.

After the screenings, we will have a discussion with special effects specialist Ricardo Spencer, who will explain how some of the most memorable effects of these two films were created.

Get ready for an unforgettable night of classic cinema, nostalgia, and thrills. Don’t miss the opportunity to relive these masterpieces on the big screen!
